Why don't come to meals? to expensive to drive

What didn't like about a meal? vegetables to dry

If noon meal would come? probably to break the day

I would come how many days? Probably 5

Some favorite meals? Liver & Onions, Meatloaf, Roast beef, short ribs, halibut or salmon

What is age? Over 60

I would like meal at noon or 6PM.

I find most portions ok but meat is usually lite.

I would suggest that if possible the server could check around occasionally to see if anything is needed by the guests. Maybe a drink, coffee or tea refill etc.

I don't understand the pricing for over 60. It says $3 - $5. Which is it, $3 or $5? If it changes constantly
how do we know if we can afford to go that night.

The price for over 60 is a donation and the suggested donation is from $3 to $5

BRINNON COMMUNITY CENTER ADVISORY BOARD MEETING

July 2nd, 2009

BRINNON COMMUNITY CENTER

ADVISORY BOARD MEETING

ATTENDEES: Bud Schindler, Alva Schaeffer, Gloria Allingham, Stan Walter, Dan Culpepper, Rick Warren, Evelyn Cemper, Kendra Hanninen, Sandy Peterson, Sandy Bardon and Pat Gaul

TOPICS DISCUSSED:

1: BCC Monthly Numbers: The numbers are good. The suggestion was made to have the visitors center extend holiday hours from 9:00 A.M. till 9:00 P.M. Bud Schindler will check into this.

2: 3rd Thursday Program: The last program was held in June. If a person can be found to coordinate the entertainment we hope to start the program again in the winter.

3: 1st Saturday Picnic: The first picnic held in June was a big success with 45 to 50 people attending. The 4th of July should be even better.

4: Nutrition: The number attending seems to be around 10 to 15. We would like to get more input on the menus from people.

5: Soup Kitchen: We are really in need of more volunteers.

6: Meals On Wheels: We have one new driver and we could use another for backup.

7: Community Garden/Pea Patch: So far there has not been to much interest in the garden. Just a small few are participating.

8: Grant Money: The bid from the local cabinet maker is in, some comparative checking will be done on the cost of pre-made units and be presented at our next meeting.

9: Picnic Shelter: The picnic shelter has been reworked and supports put in place by volunteers. Stan Walter and Dan Culpepper will construct a sign stating rules and regulations for the area.

10: New Activities: We are always looking for new activities to stimulate and draw different age groups to the Center.

11: Brinnon CC Advisory Board: We are looking for some new members for the Advisory Board, we would enjoy having some young people with new and fresh ideas attend our meetings.

Community Center Growth

People of Brinnon what can be done to get more of the community involved in the COMMUNITY CENTER here in Brinnon?

There is a stigma attached to the COMMUNITY CENTER that it is a senior center this is not true and has not been true for several years now.

Please stop by the center and talk with the manager Sandy Peterson about what you would like to see happening at the center, or contact Stan Walter of the Advisory Board. We need more activity at the center to make full use of the facility and to create more community spirit. We could also use more volunteers for different projects to keep them going or to start new activities.

We would like to see the center used for more youth activities but haven't been successful in finding any one to sponsor the activities. If you have a special talent and would like to share/teach a group of youth or adults you surely would be welcomed at the center.

Some of at the center think a class on Movie Making or Power Point Presentations would be much welcomed by the youth in the community, again please contact the Manager or Advisory Board if you have an idea of a program to promote/sponsor.

Advisory Board Meetings

June 4th, 2009

BRINNON COMMUNITY CENTER

ADVISORY BOARD MEETING

ATTENDEES: Evelyn Cemper, Dan Culpepper, Stan Walter, Bob Herbst, Sandy Peterson, Pat Gaul, George Sickel, Kendra, Uerla Coone and Sandra Bardon

TOPICS DISCUSSED:

1: BERT: The Center hosted a Rest Stop with volunteers from different local organizations serving coffee and cookies. The turn out for May alone was over 2,100.

2: Teen Group: The lack of interest caused the small group to disband. If interest picks up they may start again in the fall.

3: 3rd. Thursday Program: Unless someone is found to coordinate this program it could be discontinued in the near future.

4: Game Night: More people are participating after Senior Nutrition.

5: Nutrition: Participation is down.

6: Soup Kitchen: More volunteers are needed.

7: Meals On Wheels: We have one new driver starting soon, but we are still in need of more.

8: Community Garden: The garden has been tilled and is ready for planting.

9: Grant Money: The picnic tables have arrived and are assembled. A storage cabinet, counter sink area bid submitted by a local cabinet maker has been presented to the board. Bob Herbst is checking on prices for pre-made units.

10: Lawn Mower: The Mower will be purchased in the near future. $400.00 from the Oly-Cap Brinnon Center budget this figure will be matched by Emeral Towns Alliance. This will be presented to the Brinnon Senior Org. with the hope they will pay the balance. When the funds are available Chief Bob Herbst of the Brinnon Fire Dept. will follow thru order and purchase the mower.

11: Picnic: The Seniors and the Soup Kitchen will be hosting a potluck picnic the first Saturday of the month for June, July and August from 11:00 A.M. till 1:00 P.M.

12: Center Activities: The suggestion was made to do a one time mass mailing of the Brinnon Crier to stimulate and make local people more aware of the Centers activities. This suggestion will be presented at the Senior Org. meeting since this group pays the postage for the newsletter.

I think the Brinnon Community Blog is coming along very nicely. It is a good spot for people in the community to go to see what activities are up coming and how they could help out.

Anonymous said...

The community needs to recognize the fact that the Community Center is for the whole community not just Seniors so COME ONE COME ALL to all the activities at the Center.

Anyone can come join us for a meal as long as they have a reservation by 1pm the day before the meal they would like to attend, those under 60 will be required to pay a little more for the meal but all meals are well worth the cost which is minimal. Please come join us at the center and bring a friend along.

Todays meeting was very small, I think that we do need to start the calling lists again. Sometimes just a phone call and a little chat about what has been taking place will peak some interest. Maybe we could get some car-pool activity for these meetings and also remind folks that we stay for potluck. Most people I know like to eat, but not alone.

What's with the date at the top of this section: Wednesday, March 3, 2010. I'd volunteer to proofread but only the right kind of volunteer is acceptable and I've been rejected before.

brinnoncc said...

Well unfortunately the date at the top of this section is not in the control of the webmaster it is in the control of programmers of the blogger which host this blogging activity. There are other things that are strange also from the programmers, like these comments should appear at the bottom of each post so one could read them easily but for some reason they do not appear there until you click through from the heading of the post.

I HAVE NOT BEEN HERE VERY LONG, BUT IN THIS SHORT TIME I FIND VERY LITTLE TO DO OUT SIDE THE HOME, SEAMS LIKE MORE ACTIVITIES FOR THE SENIORS TO ENJOY COULD BE A GREAT HELP. ALSO EATING OUT AT NIGHT IS NOT THE BEST FOR SENIORS WHO MOST HAVE PROBLEMS DRIVING IN THE EVENING.

The shed has been cleaned out with a vaccuum, spiders are all in shock. New shelves will be going up soon and all totes and boxes are marked with the contents. Broken decorations I will try to repair or replace.

hope all attend the Halloween Party, we are preparing to decorate the hall and make it a festive occasion.

There are activities I would like to take part in but don't want to do alone: short hikes, fishing, clamming and getting oysters, eating out once in while, etc. If others are interested, I would like to know. Could we have these type of activities as a group once in while? Carolyn McAndrew

Patsy W. said...

Bosco was very nice to listen to, have we ever thought of working with him to have a dance. You know the kind that we 'older' folks can dance to. Maybe a little western, swing and just plain slow music ?? many of us were tapping on the table or tapping our feet.

Carolyn M. said...

Do you think there are others from south of Brinnon who haven't seen Rocky Brook Falls? If so, it would be fun to take a trip there after it rains and the leaves turn golden. It is a very short walk and could be done by wheelchair even.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, Dan, for all you have done to get Brinnon moving. My husband and I live in AZ but plan on retiring and spending at least 3-4 months in the summer at our cabin Triton Cove. We plan on volunteering at the center or wherever else we are needed and want to contribute to the community. The meals program sounds very good. Also the other bloggers' suggestions about a dance, hikes, clamming, and in general group activities are something that we would be interested in as well. Our hope is to be in the area by early next June. John and Sally N.

At the General Meeting it was stated that call lists don't work. Well I think we need to keep trying, you just might be surprised at the turn-out and heaven knows we need more folks.

Remember the Halloween Party, we are hoping that some of you come in costume. It makes a lot more fun for the kids.

Destinye said...

Wish there were more things for families to do and young kids!!! Thanks! While I know we may be welcome most of the activities are not too interesting for kids so we don't come. Something more for families and kids than occasional Holiday parties would be wonderful!

Destinye said...

The family fun nights were great (thanks Dana) maybe you could start them up again? It does not feel too kid friendly right now. Kids are part of the community too. Maybe there could be some kind of grandparent-mentor type connections - great for young and old?!

Elaine J. said...

Hi Destinye, Yes, it would be nice to have more activities for the kids and teens. Perhaps parents may need to help us with some ideas for increasing the involvement of kids and teens at the Center. I don’t think it is just up to the Center or seniors to come up with activities. Having parents come occasionally to the center when we aren’t holding Halloween or Christmas parties would be beneficial for the kids and show that Mom and Dad have an interest in increasing the attendance at the facility. After all….it is called a Community Center. Thanks, Elaine

Anonymous said...

Dear Destinye: we were being used as a 'babysitting' service, parents would just drop their kids and it was us to the seniors to keep the bickering down, entertain them and see that they had a good time. WELL, it got out of hand by the teenagers and we had to ask them to leave. Parents were involved in the conflict and it was terrible. I am doing what I can for parties, did your children attend Halloween ?? we only had 7 children and I posted all over the place as well as flyers home with all the school kids...there has to be a middle here...ideas welcome !!

Anonymous said...

We are looking for suggestions and volunteers before we try another Family Night. So far we have heard nothing..input here is what we need. It will get passed to the right folks and then we can get started planning...what do you say ??

Destinye said...

Actually I had offered to start a playgroup and run it before and would be happy to be involved if there seemed more interest in the idea.

Destinye said...

I am not sure too many people know about this website to post ideas. I have to say when I have come to the community center with child it does not feel like children are really welcomed, so I guess maybe thats why people do not go. Perhaps a community center meeting for parents and families might be a good idea to discuss what people in all areas of the community would want and how they could become involved and volunteer. I know when I enthusiastically offered to run a playgroup there the response I got was so luke-warm I just thought there was not too much interest in anything like that and gave up.

Destinye said...

I did not come to the Halloween Party this year as I had to be out of town but have on previous occasions and it seemed like everyone enjoyed it and it was good for the community.

I also tried to subscribe to the comments for the blog but the link does not seem to work. But will try to check back more often now!

I do per-take in the community center.

I am very satisfied with the activities that are currently taking place.

Anonymous said...

I believe the Community Center has a lot to offer and needs more participation from the community for all events and programs.

We are an isolated community and it is always good to know your neighbor and be there to help them in time of need whether large or small, as a community group.

Please participate in the affairs at the community center as much as you possibly can to make a better community. We need your participation!

First someone needs to update the web page. I have voluntered and filled in on many occasions in the senior nutrition program and feel that i am unapprecated, I think that the community center needs to thank volunteers more often I have never once been mentioned in any newsletter or anouncement for the center or olycap! Why would someone want to help out when only a few people thank them no WE WANT COMMUNITY RECONITION !!!!!!

Anonymous said...

As you can see someone in the community is not happy about the way people are recognized for their volunteer efforts. Let's make it a policy if you are benefited by the service of a volunteer let them know you appreciate their efforts.

Maybe this person is not thought of as a volunteer but remember this there are only two people that are waged employees in the center currently and they are the manager and cook the two most visible, others come and go for maintenance and cleaning but seldom are at time of activities.

Please just remember if you were a volunteer you would like to be recognized and given a thank you once in awhile. Wish we had room in the newsletter to recognize all the volunteers on a monthly basis.

The newsletter editor has asked for nominations for volunteer of the month, be sure to nominate your favorite.

With 'new blood' coming into the community, let's all keep an open mind about changing a few things. perhaps weeding out some of our old habits and attitudes will help. We all know that volunteers are always needed, and this is a way to feel needed, thanks in a written form should not be necessary. Just the smiles of the folks should be enough

Anonymous said...

Some time ago when a sign was posted on the reader board asking for volunteers, I went in and offered to be a volunteer. The woman at the desk said they didn't need me at the time BUT WOULD I MOW HER YARD FOR HER. I told her no, I had a couple acres of my own yard to mow, but to keep my name if the center needed volunteers. I never heard from anyone about my offer to volunteer. I always wondered if she asked women volunteers to mow her yard. Anyway, that experience kind of turned me off of the "community" center.

If you are a teenager between the ages of 12 and 16 years of age, want to help the town of Brinnon, and have fun, you have to come on down to the brinnon community center and join the Brinnon Teen Club! We want teens who are willing to commit to coming to all the meetings, the community benifits, and to have fun. Meetings are Mondays from 3:30-4:30 on Mondays.

The Health Clinics in Brinnon are great to help those that can't get out to other facilities.

This is a real plus to the Senior that are not a mobile as they used to be for foot care and the like.

Kudos for the programs available.
